The change the European Union will implement in June 2025 and that will affect smartphones and tablets: "It will be mandatory."

The European Commission has launched an action that will affect numerous electronic devices and is planned to be implemented starting in June 2025. This mandatory measure will apply to smartphones and slate tablets. The purpose of this measure is very clear: to extend the lifespan of the products.
These are the energy labeling and eco-design requirements that will be implemented on June 20th of this year and aim to increase the lifespan of mid-range smartphones from 3.0 to 4.1 years . To achieve this, a classification will be created based on energy efficiency, repairability, and durability. All smartphones released from that date onwards must have this label.
On it, we'll find a scale from A to G, which displays the energy rating. We'll also be able to see the battery life, the number of charge cycles, durability and repairability ratings, and the applicable IP rating for protection against dust and water.
Ecodesign requirementsThe European Union will soon implement several requirements for smartphones and slate tablets. These requirements are intended to impose minimum standards on products to ensure they meet the necessary requirements. The requirements will be as follows:
- Resistance to accidental drops or scratches and protection against dust and water.
- Batteries that are long-lasting enough to withstand at least 800 charge and discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of their initial capacity.
- Rules on disassembly and repair, including obligations for manufacturers to make essential spare parts available within 5 to 10 working days and for seven years after the product model ceases to be sold on the EU market.
- Availability of operating system updates for longer periods (at least 5 years from the end-of-market date of the last unit of a product model)
- Non-discriminatory access for professional repairers to any software or firmware needed for the replacement.
